So you’ve come to the realization that starting a blog could do wonders for your business, huh? You’re right — starting a blog can boost your business like never before. Of course, you must have already heard that somewhere in order to land yourself on a blog that will walk you through the steps to start a blog for your business. So, are you ready to start a blog for your business? It’s going to be super easy. Let’s get to it, shall we?
Why You Need to Start a Blog for Your Business
If you have a business, a blog should be your very next step. It’s okay if you missed the memo and have been in business a while without a blog. There’s no time like the present. Before we get started on building your blog, let’s talk about why you should have one for your business.
Blogging is #1 in Content Marketing
Content Marketing should be part of your business plan. Think about how you will be driving people to your business and generating leads and conversions. Without content marketing in your business plan, your business could be sitting pretty doing absolutely nothing. That is until you decide to start using content marketing to boost your business.
There are many ways you could carry out your plans for content marketing. But I gotta tell you, blogging is the leader in the content marketing industry. Don’t believe me? According to research done by the Content Marketing Institute, 80% of B2B marketers and 75% of B2C marketers have a blog. I promise you, these high percentages don’t come from blogs that are doing nothing for business.
Benefits of Blogging for Your Business
- Driving traffic to your website is super easy when you have a blog.
- Blogging will help you continue with branding and establishing your authority.
- Lead-generation and lead-conversions are much easier with a blog.
- Blogging can provide you with *almost* passive results.
The proof is in the numbers. Check out the infographic below by Illumination Consulting, which tells you the benefits of blogging for business in numbers.
Are you convinced that starting a blog for your business just makes sense? You don’t have to know everything there is know about blogging to get started — you just have to start. So, without further ado, let’s start your blog! Are you ready? Let’s do this!
It’s Time to Start a Blog for Your Business
This might be one of the scariest things you will do in your business, but with this guide, I am hopeful it won’t be too scary. Blogging isn’t difficult. It’s one of those things you can learn as you go.
When I started blogging years ago, I didn’t know a thing about blogging! Blogging is ever-changing. So, how things were done then is not how things are done now. You will adapt. I’ll make a rockstar blogger out of you yet! Let’s start a blog for your business!
Step 1: Domain and Hosting
I’m going to be straight with you — don’t you dare try to start a blog on a free platform for your business. This will hurt your business, not help it. A free blog stands out like a sore thumb and it won’t be a good look for your business.
I love 1&1 because you can get your entire first year starting at $12 and that includes a free domain name. $12 is worth increasing the online presence of your business, especially with the benefits listed above.
So, head over to 1&1* (or any other hosting provider of your choice). Think of what you want to call your blog and see if the matching domain name is available. If it is, great! If not, keep trying. You’ll find something that works.
Once you’ve found the perfect domain name for your blog, it’s time to choose your hosting package. 1&1’s Basic has enough to get you started. The best part is it’s completely scalable, so it can grow with you.
Checkout and wait until your order is confirmed. It can take some time for your account to get set up. Try to be patient.
Step 2: Platform
I’m not going to beat around the bush here. You want WordPress. It’s free and amazing. It is the leader among platforms and has become the industry standard. If you’re worried about it being too complex — fear not, my friend. WordPress is super easy to learn and there are a ton of online WordPress tutorials out there. I wouldn’t steer you wrong. Just install WordPress. You can thank me later.
To eliminate any confusion, know that there are WordPress.com and WordPress.org. WordPress.com would give you a free blog where your website address would be something like http://supercoolbiz.wordpress.com. We already talked about how a free blog would not be a good look for your business, right?
WordPress.org is for a self-hosted blog. Since you purchased your hosting and domain, this is exactly what you want. WordPress is listed in your apps. (Note: If you chose 1&1 as your hosting provider, opt out of the managed WordPress. There’s an extra fee and you can manage it easily yourself.)
You’ll be asked to set up an admin username and password. This is how you will login to your blog. You’ll login by going to http://insertblogurl.com/wp-admin. You should get an email once the WordPress install is complete, which will also provide you with that information.
Guess what, my friend? You officially have a blog. No, it isn’t pretty and there’s nothing on it yet, but it’s there. You should be proud of yourself. You just took an exciting step towards leveling up with your business.
I will be back with a tutorial that will go over the next steps you should take for your blog. For now, give yourself a nice pat on the back. You did it — you started a blog!
